October 15, 1864:
Confederate President Jefferson Davis puts General Braxton Bragg in command of forces in Wilmington, Delaware

October 16, 1863:
General Ulysses S Grant appointed commander of the newly created Military Division of the Mississppi

Confederate Cavalryman John Hunt Morgan routs Union cavalry forces and occupies Lexington, Kentucky

October 19 1863
Union Cavalry commanded General Judson Kilpatrick are defeated by Confederate Cavalry under General Jeb Stuart at Buckland Mills, Virginia

October 19 1864
In the northernmost action of the Civil War, Lieutenant General Bennet Young leads a Confederate force on a raid into St. Albans, Vermont

October 21 1861
Nineteen Hundred Union soldiers are killed at Balls Bluff in Leesburg Virginia after being ambushed by Confederates.

October 22 1861

Confederate establish the Department of Virginia with General Joseph E. Johnston in command.

October 22 1864

Confederate forces commanded by General Sterling Price attack Union positions near Independence, Missouri

October 23 1864

Confederate forces, commanded by General Price are forced to retreat after an attack by Union troops, commanded by General Samuel Curtis, at the Battle of Westport, Missouri
