The Old French Soldier

Post by Aloysius Kling Sr » Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:53 am

The Old French Soldier resting a few paces behind the front lines of Maréchal Davout’s III Corps contemplates how he ending up here, mouth parched and tired to near exhaustion… His head pounding and nearly deaf from the musket and cannon fire… The battle sounds had quieted some for now, but he knew the fight is far from over..

The overall La Grande Armée commander Général de Brigade Aloysius Kling Sr pulled his forces together giving ground till the army was could support an all out attack… At the same time moved all his reinforcements to the left to support this attack.. Also avoiding attacking the Austrians on the high ground to the right... The Austirans' commander Ober-Leutnant Mark Van Hattem of the Austrian Army had placed his cannon covering the low ground making any attack by the French a costly venture..

While the French attack was late it was going well, even though a Austrians counter attack was very costly… The plan seemed to be sound even though late… The Old French Soldier had heard that the Général had ordered an attack on the enemy’s far right flank which was also very costly and a failure… He closed his eyes for a moment... But then...

Cannon fire begins once more… Soon another attack on the Austrians…

The battle has been raging all day... The Old Soldier can only see a small part of it within the smoke from cannon and musket fire... He is exhausted, thirsty and there is not any part of his body that does not ache... His regiment is about done in but they keep fighting as the battle closes and the Emperor is not going to be very happy with the job the General did this day...

The battle rages on and on...
The Old Soldiers is in retreat with the rest of the La Grande Armée...
While the battle ended in a Minor Defeat... it is none the less a defeat!
The Old Soldier thinks only about a place to rest..
Battle Over.... Till next time...
